I'm Done Holding Myself Back
From time to time we all get in our own way. Our personality, insecurities, past mistakes, and reputation can all become roadblocks in our life. By nature I am quiet and reserved (team introvert :) ), but lately I see how that is getting in my way of furthering myself.
I don’t hate talking to people and I'm not as shy as I used to be, but still making small talk with strangers is not on my "things I love to do" list. Putting myself out there isn't exciting, it feels awkward. Keeping to myself, however, is comfortable and safe.
I have a friend who the complete opposite - the total definition of an extrovert. Put her in room with anyone and I promise you after 15 minutes she will know a fair amount of the that person's life story. For her it's easy and enjoyable. I admire that trait.
Growing in your career or as a person usually requires you to step outside your comfort zone. It's like they say, " To get something you've never had you have to do something you've never done". Change doesn't happen by doing the same thing. If we want to see our aspirations become a reality we have to challenge our status quo - and stepping out of our comfort zone does that perfectly.
“If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.” ― Seth Godin
I love this quote because it reminds me that coming face to face with what intimidates or scars you can lead to something wonderful. It's not about changing yourself, but challenging yourself.
In my own life I'm striving to make myself uncomfortable more frequently by putting myself out there, starting and holding conversations with strangers. I'm done letting my introvert tendencies stop me from networking and meeting others. I can't dream about my blog or business growing if I keep it to myself.
So for me it's the potential rejection and uncomfortable-ness (not a word, I know) that holds me back. But it's different for everyone. What is it that stops your from stepping outside your comfort zone?
Though it doesn't come natural, it's necessary to push ourselves lest we grow complacent. The majority of our motivation has to come from within or it will never be sustained. And though it seems scary we have nothing to fear. Our God is with us. He walks beside us and empowers us through his spirit. Just as he commanded the Israelites as the prepared to enter new territory and take the promised land he's commanding us as we embark on our own journey's.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Let's do this together. Comment and tell me what is something you want (or need) to do in order to further yourself in life? Have you started making yourself uncomfortable? If not, what's holding you back?
